What is Virtualisation?

Virtualisation takes a physical server (in our case a Dual Quad Core Xeon with at least 24GB of RAM and SCSI RAID) and splits it, at the kernel level (and in the case of HVM, at the CPU level) into separate, secure, isolated 'containers', each with their own file system and assigned resources such as CPU, memory and disk I/O. In effect, it's just like a miniature dedicated server.

A virtual dedicated server (also known as a virtual private server) from Tsohost is often a much better choice than a low end dedicated server from a low cost provider. The hardware we use for virtualisation is of the best possible quality, utilising SAS RAID 10 for performance and fault tolerance, redundant PSUs and ECC memory, often providing 100% uptime.

Since the VDSs are not constrained by physical hardware, you can upgrade or downgrade at any time with just a short period of downtime.

VDS for Performance

Whilst our shared hosting often offers the best performance you are likely to achieve with any hosted application, some applications such as Magento benefit from an environment only possible on a VDS or dedicated server - specifically having PHP run as DSO (dynamically linked into the Apache web server code) rather than as CGI. Combined with opcode caching this can offer a substantial improvement in Magento performance. Similar performance gains can also be achieved with other large PHP applications.
